We are always looking for new and exciting items to tell you about.
We have just taken stock of the new HP Mediaserver EX 470/475
For years Microsoft have been at the forefront of computing in the home, but have never branched their server technologies into our daily lives. Until now.
With the release of Windows Home server, Microsoft has taken the bold step into the home media and server market. Their Home Server operating system allows users to collaborate and centralise music, pictures, video and movies and have a secure and reliable backup device in one box that is easy and versatile to use and allows for future expansion, and even the possibility of other Windows server devices on the network.
HP has been very quick to utilise this new operating system and has come up with a device that provides the home, and possibly small business user with all the features Windows Home Server can give.
The unit itself is small, compact and quiet and is also nice to look at, although the average user will probably tuck it away in a corner or cupboard somewhere. Functionality is superb for a device of this size and features include; Network attached storage for up to 10 Users, centralised iTunes and Media Player library, shared media folders for music, photos, video, movies and applications, a central and secure backup area for all the machines in your home and a remote media and upload server.
In summary HP have created a home server that gives you masses of storage for media and data that can be accessed from an array of devices in and out of your home and a secure backup area for all your PC’s. Both versions available come with 1.8GHz AMD Sempron 3400+ processors, meaning low power consumption, 512Mb RAM and either 500Gb or 1Tb worth of Hard Drives in them. Connectivity and expandability are good, with a Gigabit LAN port providing the main connection to the network, and with 4 USB2 and an eSATA port for adding on extra drives when you have exhausted the remaining drive bays.

Overall, the HP MediaSmart Home Server is a stunning new product combining the best that HP and Microsoft have to offer in Home server and Media solutions.
A highly recommended product.
